Zyban is an antidepressant drug commonly used to help people that are trying to stop smoking. It acts by reducing the withdrawal effects due to the cravings. Zyban can also be used for other purposes, such as to treat chronic affective disorder and major depressions.
Zyban should not be prescribed to people that, in the last 14 days, have been taking any monoamine oxidase inhibitor (MAOI) including phenelzine (Nardil), isocarboxazid (Marplan), tranylcypromine (Parnate), selegiline (Eldepryl), or rasagiline (Azilect). Do not take Zyban if you have ever had and/or have seizures, if you recently stoped taking alcohol or sedatives, any form of eating and sleeping disorder, if you are already taking another Zyban-like drug. You should inform your doctor about all the medications you are taking and about all your medical conditions as Zyban may have side effects such as seizures.
Immediately contact your treating doctor if you notice any change in the symptoms or if the amplify. You may need emergency medical help were you to suffer from any of the following signs of a serious allergic reaction: problems to breath and eat; swelling of the face, tongue, lips and/or throat; hives. Also contact your doctor at once if notice any new side effects: mood or behavior disorder, anxiety, panic attacks, trouble sleeping, or if you feel impulsive, irritable, agitated, hostile, aggressive, restless, hyperactive (mentally or physically), highly depressed, or if you have any thoughts about committing suicide or hurting yourself.
You should not. in any case, restart smoking, if you are taking Zyban along with a nicotine-based product, or while taking alchohol as this will greatly increase the probability of having seizures. Also an overdose of nicotine will cause serious complications and dangerous reactions.
